How to cope with Anxiety

Writer: Malefeu Mamedupi Lethuba Malefeu Mamedupi Lethuba

As much as we are responsible for our actions, sometimes we have no control over our feelings. One day your heart is thumping with joy, the next day, you can barely pace your breathing. I am not a certified psychologist, or a psychologist of any sort, but I hope this post gives you a bit of warmth when you are feeling blue and uneasy. Anxiety has the power to ruin your day, the power to change your plans and leave you feeling empty. Sometimes you feel lost and defeated, you feel like drowning in your own tears, and hiding from your unkind reality. Here are a few tips to help you cope with Anxiety:

Identify the source of your Anxiety: The first step is identifying the things that trigger your Anxiety - why do you feel this way? etc. When you identify the problem, it is easier to come up with solutions. Depending on the severity of your Anxiety, you can learn to avoid or deal with your triggers.

Do not suffer in silence: Different methods work for different people - find a method that works for you. Breathing exercises can help mitigate the effects of Anxiety. Keeping a journal can also take the load off your shoulders. Writing has a healing power - when you write about your feelings and thoughts you claim ownership of your decisions. It is important to know that you are not alone, a lot of people can relate to your painful experience. Talk to your loved ones about your Anxiety, seek professional help and believe in the process. If you are too scared to consider therapy, take baby steps, Google has several platforms to help you from the comfort of your home. Literally open the search engine and type "how to cope with Anxiety" or "I do not feel too well, what now?" etc.

It takes time: Experiencing Anxiety is a part of life's uncertainties, it is normal, you do not plan for it! Note that Anxiety does not completely go away, all you can do is reduce its impact when it occurs. Be patient with yourself, do not be so hard on yourself, and remain optimistic.

"You don’t have to control your thoughts. You just have to stop letting them control you".

- Dan Millman

"Trust yourself. You’ve survived a lot, and you’ll survive whatever is coming".

- Robert Tew
